DT Swiss Competition J-Bend Spoke The company now known as DT Swiss has been drawing steel in Biel for over 350 years; with their spokes still made entirely in-house in Switzerland to the highest standards of quality and workmanship. The classic lightweight butted spoke; the Comp; is a cycling staple relied upon by everyone from commuters to World Cup downhillers; when in doubt; use Comps! The 14/15 gauge double butted spoke is 1.8 mm thick in the centre to save weight; but 2 mm thick at the ends where strength is required. While other brands stretch and weaken their spokes to butt them; DT’s unique and closely patented ultrasonic peening process cold forges the spokes; actually strengthening the metal. This gives DT spokes the best strength-to-weight ratio of any butted spokes. Made exclusively from Swedish X5 stainless steel; custom blended specifically for DT; these spokes are finished in black using an electro-chemical treatment that is durable and does not weaken the spoke. The rolling of the nipple thread does not remove any metal from the spoke; preserving the grain of the material. This maximises strength and greatly reduces the likelihood of failure at the threads; a common issue with lower quality spokes.
